Abstract:
Memetics is a new theory that interprets cultural evolution, which originates in western countries; and it is obtaining greater and greaterdevelopment. The paper analyzes the implications of memetics on Chinese classics translation. According to these implications, the paper points out that the ChineseEnglishtranslation strategies of the cultural elements of Chinese classics can be divided into two sections: genotypeoriented C-E translation strategies and phenotypeoriented C-Etranslation strategies, and genotypeoriented C-E translation strategies include two parts: the strategies that can make original text memes transmit in the same way and theones that can make original text memes transmit in the equivalent way. And the paper illustrates them with examples from Sun Tzus Art of War. Finally, the paper points out that translators should face the cultural reality and flexibly utilize these strategies in the two sections so as to establish the true image of Chinese culture and make readersin Englishspeaking counties accept our Chinese classics. And only this can make Chinese classics exert its positive influence.
