Retranslation of A Quiet Maiden in“Bei Feng”from Different Perspectives of Research on “Tong Guan”

The maiden chaste, demure, gives me a red grass. The grass bright and pure, stirs love of my lass.

Abstract: The present paper carried out a detailed research on the poem of A Quiet Maiden in Bei feng compiled in Regional Songs from the Book of Poetry, which is translated by Mr Wang Rongpei and Mrs Pan Zhi-dan. The author argued from the point views of critical interpretation of ancient texts, literal texts and the study of objects and their functions that Tong guan in the original Chinese poem refers not to flute, but to a red grass. Thus the second part of the original poem should be translated as The maiden chaste, demure, gives me a red grass. The grass bright and pure, stirs love of my lass. According to the translation standards of spirit transmission and meaning conveyance advocated by Mr Wang Rong-pei himself, it is concluded that the revised version of the poem is better than the original translation in terms of the translation of the poems rhythm, artistic conception and cultural connotation.
