Abstract:
In order to rehabilitate degraded sub-alpine rangeland in northwest of Yunnan province, rangeland co-management was introduced to Kengong community, located in Xiao Zhong Dian Township, in 2008. It is proved that rangeland co-management have increased participation of stakeholders such as government official, researcher, and agropastoralist, especially the rural community. Moreover, cooperation between stakeholders has been strengthened while in the past they usually paid more attention to activities based on their interest without much coordination. The implementation of rangeland co-management could enhance sustainable development of rangeland. In order to let people learn more about the approach, lessons and experiences have been summarized in the paper. There are there steps to implement rangeland co-management: (1) stakeholders related to rangelands resources identified problems existed in rangeland management; based on evaluation, rangeland managing committee will be established. (2) an agreement revolving around rangeland comanagement is signed by all stakeholders after negotiation. (3) each stakeholder carries out his own activities based on responsibility in the agreement.
