Abstract:
This article will mainly analyze the use of figures of speech and their functions in College English New Integrated Coursebook (Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press 20031) in order to make the college English learners understand their functions and usages in different context. The analysis is made according to the classifications of figures of speech of the present day, which fall into the following categories: (1)Figures of resemblance or relationship. (2)Figures of emphasis or understatement. (3) Figures of verbal games. Finally, the author points out: the use of figures of speech is encouraged, for their creating strong image through writers’ picturepaintings in colorful words, and making the things described more vivid and unforgettable. Whats more, it is also a good method for university English teachers to arouse the university students’ enthusiasm of learning English.
