Abstract: This article discusses the role played by the American nationalist intellectuals in pushing the independence and promoting the development of the American English. They launched a counterattack against the ridiculous British criticism upon their own language to justify its legality as a national language of the American people. Meanwhile, they devoted themselves to innovating and reforming the language.
