Abstract:
Secondary English teaching methodology of none-missionary schools from 1912 to 1937 featured the characteristics of pertinence and varieties, including all functions of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The introduction of Direct Methodology and the concept of choosing appropriate methods according to different teaching backgrounds promoted English teaching standard. In addition, English exams were more properly arranged and more policies and regulations were enacted, which showed the importance of English. However, due to the lack of funds and slack administration of schools, the quality of secondary English education in Sichuan was still very low.
