Abstract: As one of the major national English speaking contests, CCTV Star of OUTLOOK English Talent Competition serves as a platform for contestants of all ages to participate and compete. To be qualified in the National Final and to be the top 10 shining stars are dreams shared by every competitor.However, the author has found after an empirical research that some contestants show weak competitiveness during the competition with some common problems including deficient English language capability, poor stage performance and lacking in confidence. With analysis and summary of these problems, this paper aims to provide feasible techniques for improving competitiveness in the National Preliminary Round for the college group, hopefully with which could be helpful and beneficial for contestants' further competition.
