Abstract
Purpose Our aim was to discuss whether fencing can promote the increase of soil biological activities in sub-alpine meadow.Method The free grazing plot, 4 years of seasonal fencing plot, 4 years of totally fencing plot and 20 years of seasonal fencing and mowing plot of sub-alpine meadow in northwestern of Yunnan were selected, and the effects of grazing and fencing on soil biological characteristics were researched in this study. Results Compared with free grazing, the soil organic carbon, available N and P increased and the available K decreased significantly, the number of soil bacteria and actinomycetes decreased, the number of fungi increased, and the total microorganisms decreased significantly, and the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen increased significantly at the same time. Conclusion Compared with free grazing, fencing can promote the increase of soil organic carbon, available N, available P and soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. The results of this study can provide guidance for the formulation of suitable management strategy and the rational utilization of grassland in China's ecological fragile areas.
