The Effects of Watermelon Rind on Population Growth of Paramoecium Caudatum

  • Ten kinds of mediums were used in the study,they were respectively 2%,4%,6%,8%,10%,12%,14%,16%,18%,20% media of watermelon rind, being used to culture paramecium (Paramecium caudatum),to compare the effects of different mediums of watermelon rind on the population growth of paramecium and select the suitable mediums for culturing paramecium.After culturing paramecium of 4 d,7 d,10 d,16 d,19 d,30 d, micro-counting methodwere used and cultivation period was 30 days. The results showed that 2%,4%,6%,8% of watermelon rind mediums, paramecium maximum density were respectively (533.3626.47), (666.7015.46), (920.1016.47) and (880.5746.35) mL-1 at 10 days. The maximum density of concentration of 10%,12%,14%,16% watermelon rind mediums were respectively (640.5324.21), (741.3228.32),(862.0735.19) and (912.8635.86)mL-1 at 7 days. At 16 days, paramecium density in all cultures began to fell sharply at 10%,12%,14%,12% of medium. At 30 day, 2%,4%,6%,8% of watermelon rind mediums could detect a few paramecia. From whole period, the most suitable concentration of watermelon rind mediums were 6% and 8% and the best time was 7 to 10 days. This experiment was intended to cultivate paramecium in biological experiment teaching and scientific research to provide fast, economic and feasible methods for culturing paramecium.
