Rearing of Myzus persicae and Aphidius gifuensis on Cruciferous Crops

  • Selection of plant host had important significance for Aphidius gifuensis and Myzus persicae mass rearing. The number change of M. persicae with time on 8 different varieties of cruciferous host plants after inoculation and number of M. persicae on different host plants after inoculation for 30 days were compared, and continuously A. gifuensis were reared on the 5 varieties with higher number of aphids in this experiment. The results showed that the number of M. persicae in this experiment on all varieties of cruciferous host plants in this experiment showed an increasing trend with the prolonged of inoculation time, and the higher number of M. persicae on 5 varieties crops, that were Chinese Cabbage Banzha super Xiafei, Chinese cabbage Banzha 19, white radish Seasons, red radish Leaf Covered in Red and yellow raddish Ziyang Shandong ranged from 847.75 to 1198.75 individuals per plant while lower on another 3 varieties crops, that were Chinese cabbage Shangdong 19, mustard Leaf and rape A35 ranged from 628.88 to 677.43 individuals per plant after 30 days, and the mean aphids individuals per plant on 8 varieties showed significant difference(F=2.67,P=0.02). Therefore, the different varieties of crops in this experiment are ideal hosts for M. persicae. And the best variety was Chinese cabbage, then the yellow radish, white radish and red radish. When aphids inoculated after 30 days, 5 varieties of crops with higher number of aphids were selected to rear A. gifuensis. The results showed that 25 days after A. gifuensis released at ratio of Aphidius to Aphids was 1:50, the mean number of aphid mummies per plant ranged from 994.67 to 1432.00 individuals, which showed no significant difference among varieties. And the normal aphids still were 2969.67 and 1280.00 individuals respectively per plant on the white radish and yellow radish, which showed it still had much potential to rear aphids and its parasites. Therefore, Chinese cabbage and Radish were the suitable crops for M. persicae rearing, while the best variety was white radish and yellow radish for A. gifuensis and M. persicae mass rearing. The results provide the basis for A. gifuensis and M. persicae mass rearing.
