Purpose To screen superior mulberry varieties that are highly compatible with the cross-shaped flat trellis model, and to accelerate the promotion and application of high-quality mulberry cultivation techniques, promoting the modernization process of China’s mulberry industry.
Methods Ten common fresh mulberry varieties were selected as the experimental subjects, and all varieties were uniformly cultivated under the cross-shaped flat trellis model. A comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the variety characteristics, tree growth characteristics, appearance indicators, nutritional indicators and antioxidant activity of different mulberry varieties were conducted.
Results The tree vigor growth of variety Anshen was weak and could not cover the trellis, while other varieties could effectively use the trellis space. Varieties Xiangjinshen, Changguosang, Jitiansang and Hongmanao had good flavor and strong disease resistance. The yield, total polyphenol content, and total flavonoid content of varieties Da 10 and 46C019 were relatively high, but the total soluble solids (TSS) content, solid-acid ratio, and sugar-acid ratio were relatively low, resulting in a mediocre taste and flavor. Although the TSS, total sugar, and total acid content of white-fruited varieties such as Guihuami, Hongmanao and Baiyuwang were not outstanding and had weak antioxidant capacity, their solid-acid ratio and sugar-acid ratio ranked above average, with a pleasant sour and sweet taste.
Conclusion The cross-shaped flat trellis model has a wide range of adaptability to mulberry varieties. Xiangjinshen, Changguosang, Jitiansang and white-fruited varieties have better taste and flavor, and can be used as the preferred varieties for leisure and sightseeing picking gardens; Da 10 and 46C019 varieties have yield advantages, but their taste and flavor are average, making them more suitable for deep processing.
