Study on Chemical Constituents with NeuroprotectiveEffects from Alpinia officinarum Hance

  • PurposeTo study the chemical constituents and neuroprotective effects from rhizome of Alpinia officinarum Hance.
MethodsThe chemical constituents from the rhizome of A. officinarum were isolated and purified by positive and reverse chromatography, their structures were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry techniques. The neuroprotective activities of the compounds were studied by CCK-8 method on the H2O2-induced SH-SY5Y cells.
    ResultsTwenty-two compounds were isolated from the rhizome of A. officinarum. They were identified as kaempferide-4′-methylether (1), galangin (2), kaempferol (3), 3,4′-dimethoxy-3′,5,7-trihydroxyflavone (4), kaempferol-3-methyl ether (5), 5,7,3′,4′-tetra-methoxycatechin (6), dihydrokaempferol (7), naringenin (8), pinocembrin (9), epoxypinocembrin chalcone (10), (4aS,7S)-7-hydroxy-1,4a-dimethyl-7-(prop-1-en-2-yl)-4,4a,5,6,7, 8-hexahydronaphthalen-2(3H)-one (11), cadalene (12), curcuminol D (13), bakuchiol (14), 4-hydroxymellein (15), rel-(3R,3′S,4R,4′S)-3,3′,4,4′-tetrahydro-6,6′-dimethoxy(3,3′-bi-2H-benzopyran)-4,4′-diol (16), methyl 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoate (17), zingerone (18), butyl benzoate (19), vanillin (20), acetovanillone (21), heptadecanoic acid (22). Compounds 1, 7 and 18 could protect the SH-SY5Y cells form the H2O2-induced damages.
ConclusionCompounds 5, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 19 are isolated from this plant for the first time. Compounds 1, 7 and 18 shows significant neuroprotective effects which can be developed as potential neuroprotective agents.
