PurposeTo investigate the effects of Panax notoginseng stem (PNS) extracts and Panax notoginseng leaf (PNL) extracts on the blood lipid and blood glucose index in high-fat diet fed mice.
MethodsThirty male C57BL/6J mice aged 7 to 8 weeks were randomly divided into 3 groups, and were fed high-fat diet for 16 weeks with or without 5 g/L PNL or PNS. Body weight and fasting blood glucose of mice were measured every week. Insulin tolerant test (ITT) were performed one week before sacrificing the mice. Plasma total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (CHOL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and tissue/body weight index were measured.
ResultsPNS and PNL did not inhibit body weight gain or fat accumulation in high-fat diet fed mice, but significantly improved plasma TG, CHOL, LDL-C, AST and ALT (P<0.05). PNS and PNL both alleviated fatty liver and insulin resistance induced by high-fat diet in these animals.
ConclusionPNS and PNL both improved blood lipid and blood glucose indexes in high-fat diet fed mice.
