Purpose In order to classify the causal pathogen of a new disease of leaf spot on rubber tree was found at rubber tree nurseries in Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan Province during a survey of rubber tree disease, causing necrosis and discolor of leaves and stems or even dead back.
Method Ten isolates were obtained from eight samples of diseased rubber tree leaves through a method of tissue isolation and classified by morphological observation, physiology and biochemistry study, sequence analyses of rDNA-ITS and EF1-α, and its pathogenicity was confirmed by Koch’s postulate.
Result The colony characteristics, microscopic morphological characteristics and physiological and biochemical characteristics of the pathogen were consistent with that of Lasiodiplodia theobromae.
Conclusion The pathogen was identified asL. theobromae. The fungal species is firstly reported as the pathogen of rubber tree leaf spot.
