Purpose Setaria sphacelata is one of excellent tropical and subtropical forages and ground plants. However, its seeds are low vigor and deep dormancy. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of storage age on seed vigor and nutrient content of the S. sphacelata.
Method We determined the seed germination rate, vigor level and nutrient content, contrasting with the net seeds of the new harvest and using natural storage for 1, 2, 3 and 4 years of net seeds as test materials.
Results The seeds stored for 1 year had the highest germination rate, germination index and vigor index. The crude protein and the crude fiber content showed the trend of decreasing after increasing. The content of water, calcium and phosphorus showed a steady trend after decreasing.
Conclusion It is suggested that storage seeds for 1 and 2 years can be used about the cultivation and utilization of S. sphacelata.
