Purpose To identify a macro-fungi specimen collected in the campus of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
Methods Both phylogenetic analysis (building NJ tree based on rDNA ITS sequences) and morphological study were applied to identification of the specimen. Morphology included macro- and micro-morphological features, the former was mainly based on fresh fruiting bodies and field notes, and the latter was obtained from microscopic observation and measurement (including that of spore size and ornamentation by SEM) of hand-sectioned dry specimen.
Results Sequence similarity of the examined specimen with Calvatia holothurioides is 99%, they clustered together with strong support in the phylogram of NJ tree and shared consistent morphological characteristics.
Conclusion The collected specimen was identified as C. holothurioides based on both phylogenetic and morphological evidence, and it is recognized as a new record of China.
