Pollen Morphologies of R. odorata and R. chinensis from Rosa sect. chinenses DC.

  • PurposesBy observing pollen morphology, to analyze the evolutionary relationships of the species of Rosa sect. chinenses.
MethodsTwenty-five individuals that belong to R. sect. chinenses were used as the materials. Using electron scanning microscope, twelve characters of pollen grains were observed and analyzed. Meanwhile a cluster analysis was conducted.
ResultsPollen dispersed as monads, prolate and perprolate (P/E arranged from 1.98 to 2.35); size medium (36.06-42.81) μm×(16.39-20.07) μm; tricolpate; perforate-striateornamentation. Characters of the exine have a certain similarity among all 25 individuals, but the exine can still be subdivided according to some non-quantitative traits such as striate and fovela. The results of cluster analysis showed that all pollen materials were clustered into 4 groups.
ConclusionR. odorata germplasms are generally at a more evolved level in Rosa L.
